My first involvement with several staff of PTA who were originally working with NATA commenced in 1987 when the Occupational Hygiene Technical Group was formed. In 1989, the National Asbestos Program (NAP) was implemented, and soon after I started generating airborne asbestos sample filters for the program. In the early 1990’s I started providing NATA with bulk samples (many of them initially by courtesy of Alan Rogers of the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (NOHSC)). In 2006 the program was transferred to the newly formed PTA.

Throughout a total of 38 years, I have found the PTA staff have been a delight to work with, and always with the highest level of integrity no matter what the challenges. My present involvement continues as one of two pro-bono technical advisors to PTA on airborne and bulk asbestos samples, and the same amazing PTA culture continues. I am proud to assist them when I can.

I have been engaging with the PTA to organise asbestos proficiency tests for our asbestos analysts in both New Zealand and Australia for over 8 years, and this now forms a key part of our analyst competency assessments. Our laboratory has used the PTA proficiency programs for many years. In general, the programs are pertinent to the analytical regimes and concentration ranges that are our laboratory are exposed to.
