Proficiency Testing Australia (PTA) is pleased to announce the launch of the Bolts Proficiency Testing Program.

Round 1 of this program will involve participants testing samples of bolts for their breaking load.  This round of the program has been designed to cover the methods of AS 4291.1 - 2015 or ISO 898 - 2013 or ASTM F606/F606M - 16.  Participants may also use other, equivalent methods routinely used in their laboratory.

Future rounds of the Bolts program could involve participants testing a number of other mechanical properties of bolt samples including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Tensile tests for tensile strength.
  • Tensile tests for other tensile properties, such as elongation, yield strength and reduction in area.
  • Stress under proof load.
  • Head soundness tests.
  • Surface hardness tests.
  • Cross section hardness tests.
  • Impact strength.
  • Determining the grade of the bolt (usually done with the combination of chemical analysis / tensile testing / hardness testing).

The tests covered will vary from round to round, as will the dimensions and grades of steel of the bolt samples.

Registration for participation in Round 1 of the Bolts Proficiency Testing Program will be open throughout July 2018.
